Back Cove 30’s new engine from Yanmar

Penobscot Bay in the center of Maine's coastline is a pretty nice place to go to work and yesterday I was able to go on sea trial with the engineering teams from Back Cove Yachts and Mack Boring and Parts for the first test of the new Yanmar 320hp 8LV engine in the Back Cove 30. This particular hull is destined for Australia and we test all export boats but this one was special in that it had the new standard engine which is IMO Tier III compliant. The results were as expected when it came to speed and fuel consumption but the bonus was a significant reduction in sound levels. Following is a screen shot from my IPhone of the speed at WOT.
BC30Test

At 25 knots she was burning 14 GPH and sound levels were at 81 Dba. That's 1.8 miles per gallon and a very good number for a 12,000 lb boat.
